100 years of Lyonel Feininger in Weimar and in the Weimar country
Weimar is the epitome of German culture; it is the city of classic, of Goethe and Schiller, and the great period of Franz Liszt. Weimar ALSO stands for the start into the modern; the Bauhaus school, Walter Gropius, Henry van de Velde and Lionel Feininger tried new aesthetics in architecture and art.
Fifty years ago - 1956 - Feininger died in New York; 100 years ago he came to Weimar to the "City of his Life's Miracle". From all the other famous Bauhaus masters, that makes him the actual Weimar citizen.
The 28- km- long bicycle route on the traces of Lyonel Feininger leads through the favourite places of the painter, whose churches and farms he sketched as of 1911, always armed with a sketching pad.

With or without Madame Luise, on foot or by bicycle. The tour begins in Weimar in the Geschwister- School- Strasse at the Bauhaus university. Feininger lectured here in the years 1919 – 1925. The first atelier of the artist is in the immediate vicinity: in the Bauhausstreet. Further towards the west, past the gardens, the route leads to the Kirschbach valley in the direction of Niedergrunstedt, then along the Stieren brook. From Niedergrunstedt the old overland road will take you to Gelmeroda and then from village to village up to Steinbrücke in Upper Weimar. From here the Goethe park will easily take you into the centre of the city of Weimar.
